Contest puts state association on the map Umhoefer The World Championship Cheese Contest was once a low-key affair. When John Umhoefer became executive director of the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association in 1992, the biennial event was held inside a butter factory cooler. Fast forward to March 2014. More than 2,600 entries, competing in 90 categories, took up the entire exhibit hall of the convention center in Madison.
